Who this is for
Anyone unsure whether the machine is “off,” “asleep,” or “broken.” Already sign in daily without thinking? Skip to CB-02.
The emergency brake (if you feel stuck or panicked)
- Screen went dark? Tap any key or the power button once — it is probably asleep, not broken.
- Stuck on a password screen? Stop guessing after three tries. Password resets need a human, not more attempts.
Name the three states
About 5 min
Write these three lines on paper — they are the whole lesson:
- Write: Awake = I see my desktop or login.
- Write: Sleep = dark screen, wakes fast.
- Write: Shut down = fully off, takes longer to come back.
Practice the cycle
About 10 min
- If the machine is asleep or off, wake it and sign in.
- Put it to sleep, wait 10 seconds, then wake it. It should not need a full boot.
- Shut it down, wait 20 seconds, power on, sign in.
- On a Mac: Apple menu → Sleep or Shut Down. Wake with the power key or by opening the lid.
- On Windows: Start → Power → Sleep or Shut down. Wake with the power button.
Try this
Put the machine to sleep right now, count to ten, then wake it.
You should see: your login screen within seconds — no spinning logo, no long wait. That fast return is what sleep means.
Hold the power button down for a long time to “turn it off faster.” That forces the machine off mid-thought. Tap once; use the menu.
Learn lid habits
About 5 min
On a laptop, closing the lid usually sleeps the machine. That is normal — not a crash. Shut down fully when traveling for days, or when a helper asks you to.
Try this
Close your laptop lid, wait 10 seconds, open it again.
You should see: the login screen, with everything where you left it. Desktop with no lid? Skip this step — you already passed it.
Success check
- Signed in without panic
- Used Sleep and Shut Down once each
- Can say one sentence: when I choose sleep vs shut down
Common failure modes
| Failure | Fix |
|---|---|
| Held power too long (forced off) | Tap once for sleep or the power menu; long-press is emergency only |
| Forgot password | Stop the module; use account recovery or a human — don’t guess forever |
| “Black screen” but machine is asleep | Try the lid, a power tap, or any key; wait 10 seconds |
Don't download / get help
Don’t download a “PC cleaner” app from a random ad after a freeze. Don’t share your password with any “AI helper” or remote stranger. Get help if you can’t sign in, see disk errors, or the machine won’t power on at all.
Stop here — don't beat yourself up. Book a free 15-minute consult and we'll do it together on screen share.
