Who this is for
Anyone who only opens apps from random Desktop icons — or can’t find an app that “used to be there.”
The emergency brake (if you feel stuck or panicked)
- “My icon disappeared”? The app is still installed. Use Start (Windows) or Spotlight (Mac) below — icons move, search finds.
- Nothing on screen but wallpaper? That is the Desktop. It is a place, not an error.
Point at the Desktop
About 5 min
- Click the Desktop background (an empty area with no icons).
- Say: “This is the Desktop. Icons here are shortcuts or files — not the only place apps live.”
Switch from the strip
About 10 min
- Find your strip: the Dock (Mac, usually bottom) or taskbar (Windows, usually bottom).
- Click your browser icon there to focus it. Click Notes/Notepad. Prefer this over double-clicking Desktop icons five times.
Try this
Switch between browser and Notes using only the Dock/taskbar.
You should see: each app coming forward with one click — no new copies, no hunting. If a click opened a duplicate, close it and click slower.
Launch with search
About 10 min
- Mac: press Cmd+Space, type
SafariorChrome, press Enter. - Windows: press the Windows key, type
EdgeorChrome, press Enter. - Quit the demo calm: you can always find the browser this way even if the icon moved.
Download “Desktop beautifier” toolbars or icon packs. The strip and search you already have are the whole system.
Success check
- Pointed to Dock or taskbar correctly
- Opened an app with Spotlight or Start
- Returned to the Desktop once on purpose
Common failure modes
| Failure | Fix |
|---|---|
| Search shows files, not apps | Type the app name fully; choose the Application entry |
| Dock auto-hidden | Move the pointer to the bottom (or side) edge and wait |
| “My icon disappeared” | Use Start/Spotlight; re-pin later |
